is another of Tom Burhyte's great photos. This one shows
what it was like in downtown Elmira when there were stores,
stores, and more stores. Center Stage is the Gorton Coy
Building, once the Gimbel's of the Southern Tier.
was tight on the homefront in 1942. Dads were overseas
fighting World War II. And moms and kids lined the streets
every afternoon on their way to a monthly sojourn of window
shopping in Elmira's Downtown. They might enjoy a rare
lunch at Iszard's Tea Room or take in a 25 cent movie
and watch the newsreels of the War at the Colonial Theater.
Tom Burhyte, for allowing us to show your photos here
at Elmira Country.
